Motivation through Music

It doesn't happen that often, but sometimes I'll notice someone working out without headphones. It leaves me to wonder if they just forgot them, or if they actually workout without any music. Either way, I'm impressed by anyone who can get in a quality workout with musical inspiration. If I'm feeling adventurous, I'll throw my iPod on "shuffle" and see what happens, but I usually try and find time to create the perfect arrangement of tunes to get me fired up. The selection changes on a … [Read more...]

Cardio Change Up.

I'm hope I'm not the only one to have a love/hate relationship with "Cardio Days". I know a good run gives me a good sweat, and helps burn off the ice cream I (may have) indulged in, but I mostly find cardio quite monotonous and boring. It doesn't matter if I'm on the treadmill, the elliptical, the bike, the stepper, or even the rowing machine- they're all activities that require me to move on the spot for at least 10 minutes at a time -- which gets really old and boring, really fast. I may … [Read more...]

Pushed to the Limits

After feeling under the weather for weeks on end, I could barely remember what it felt like to wake up in the morning and feel normal. I recently found out I was anaemic; the lack of iron in my body was depleting me of any energy and leaving me overly tired. There were so many days when getting out of bed was an overwhelming chore and I had zero motivation to perform the most minimal, everyday tasks. I would sleep all day, or vegetate on the couch watching mindless TV shows; going to the gym … [Read more...]

Severed Support

I can't tell you how many times I've twisted and/or sprained my ankles. (Yes, that is plural.) Come to think of it, there was one time when I actually twisted both ankles at the same time, in one swift motion on a stairwell. Most people say I'm just a little clumsy, while I tend to blame it on genetically weak ankles. Regardless of reasoning, repeat injuries have made my ankles almost useless on their own, and almost unreliable when it comes to any sort of intense, dynamic workouts. The … [Read more...]

Treat Yourself to Breakfast

Back in high school, I would wait until the very last minute to roll out of bed before I had to rush off to school. Eating breakfast was the least of my priorities. After sleep, my mind was focused on boys, hair, makeup, boys, the perfect outfit, the right shoes, boys, and maybe some homework. Things have changed since then; a day without breakfast makes for a sub-par day, with an unhappy me. Through experience, I've learned that people weren't lying when they said that breakfast is the … [Read more...]

Whiner turned Winner

I was a walking zombie that day, and didn't feel like working out. I was feeling incredibly lazy, with no energy or motivation - but I knew if I skipped out on exercise, I'd hate myself later for it. My unwillingness to move made the 20 minute trek to Blitz seem longer than usual; the closer I got to my destination, the more I dreaded the idea of the workout to come. My apathetic state of mind intensified when I got to Blitz, and I managed to convince Chris into executing a subdued, less … [Read more...]

“Screw the Scale!”

I am a writer. I get through every day of my life with words, sentences and properly phrased paragraphs. I like letters and the idea of anything to do with a numerical value, scares me. So when my new doctor asked me to step on the scale, I panicked. Knowing I couldn't avoid the digital truth to come, I took a deep breath and placed myself onto the machine. In meer seconds, I was instantly classified by a simple, yet shocking, 3 digit number. My heart sunk. 3 years ago, I was lean and … [Read more...]

Going Green

broccolini10

I grew up disgusted by the thought of green vegetables on my plate. My father would purposely put them on my plate, and I was constantly forced to stay at the dinner table until they were all gone. Scowling as I loaded them up on my fork, it was usually a dramatic event as I tried not to gag, spit, or cry about the chore of eating them. Today, bags of frozen peas, beans, brussel sprouts, asparagus, and broccoli consume my freezer. The crisper in the fridge is full of leafy spinach, kale, and … [Read more...]

[Work] Out Sick

It all started with a migraine turned slight headache, that I thought was caused by stress. I took a few days off work, relaxed, and started feeling better. Apparently, the headache wasn't finished torturing me. It reappeared after one day, and haunted me slightly in the days that followed. Soon enough, it got the best of me. I fainted in my apartment's elevator; I knew I had to go to the doctor, then take some days off and get better. I'm the worst at being sick. I get irritable, and I'm … [Read more...]

Why I Workout

female-workout

My latest sick spell hit me pretty hard, and I knew that going to the gym was a bad idea. My body needed to rest and recoupe;  things would have gone from bad to worse if I tried to push myself through a workout. During the onset of my illness, it pained me to avoid the gym. I was itching to throw on my runners, grab my workout gear, and sweat out the sickness. As the days went by and the symptoms of being sick stuck around, I learned to accept the fact that the gym and I had to spend some … [Read more...]
